Extract from 'Beach Sounds', a short story:
'I scanned the crowd on the beach. I could see loads of mums - they were sharing out sandwiches, or rubbing sun lotion into their kids' skin, or waving to someone. Always keeping watch. That's what mums do. I looked for my mum. I must have drifted a bit, because it took a few seconds to spot her.
There she was. Parked in front of the ice-cream van. Our red-and-blue blanket was spread out on the sand and the cool box stood next to it. The sun glinted off the chrome wheels of the wheelchair as she sat watching - like all the other mums. Though not like all the other mums at all.'
